We've all been there. You finish your makeup at home, look in the mirror and think everything looks perfect. Then you step outside, catch your reflection somewhere and suddenly you're questioning everything.
Your foundation looks heavier. Your concealer looks different. Your lip colour suddenly seems much stronger. And somehow the makeup that looked effortless ten minutes ago doesn't look quite the same anymore.
The good news? Your makeup probably isn't the problem. You're simply seeing it in a completely different light.
THE LIGHTING CHANGES EVERYTHING
Bathroom lighting can be surprisingly forgiving. Artificial light can soften shadows and change the way colour appears on your skin.
Natural daylight is different. It shows more texture, changes the appearance of colour and gives you a much more realistic idea of what your makeup actually looks like.
YOUR BASE CAN LOOK COMPLETELY DIFFERENT
Foundation and concealer are often the first things we notice when we step outside. What looked smooth indoors can suddenly appear heavier or more noticeable in daylight.
This doesn't always mean you need a different foundation. Sometimes using a little less product is all it takes. Start with a thin layer and add coverage only where you actually need it.
THEN THERE'S THE LIP COMBO
Lips can change the entire feeling of a makeup look. A lip liner that looks soft in your bedroom mirror can appear much stronger outside.
Instead of immediately removing everything, take a step back. Look at your lips as part of your entire face. Sometimes the combination actually looks better from a normal distance than it does up close.
YOU'RE PROBABLY TOO CLOSE TO THE MIRROR
When you're getting ready, it's easy to stand inches away from the mirror and inspect every tiny detail. Every pore. Every line. Every little imperfection.
But that's not how people normally see you. Step back and look at your whole face instead. Your makeup will often look much more balanced.
THE FINAL CHECK
Before you leave, try checking your makeup in natural light if you can. Look at your base, your brows and your lips from a normal distance.
You don't need to fix every little thing you notice. One small adjustment is usually enough.
Your makeup doesn't have to look perfect from two centimetres away. It just has to feel like you.
